Folic acid: Low maternal folate levels are a risk factor for neural tube defects in the developing fetus. It is therefore widely recommended that women of childbearing age take folic acid supplements for at least one month before conception to increase maternal folate levels, with a daily intake of 400 μg providing the beneficial effect. Folates contribute to the process of cell division and the growth of maternal tissues during pregnancy, and contribute to normal amino acid synthesis as well as normal blood cell formation and normal homocysteine metabolism.
